Ranking Member Lofgren Applauds NOAA Effort to Use AI to Translate Forecasts and Warnings into Spanish and Chinese
(WASHINGTON, D.C.)—Today, the National Weather Service (NWS) announced an experimental language translation website that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to translate NWS forecasts and warnings into Spanish and Simplified Chinese. In preliminary testing, forecasters using the AI model reduced the time needed to translate National Hurricane Center information from one hour to less than ten minutes.
"Translating NOAA's life-saving alerts is a key step in ensuring we can keep everyone safe," said Ranking Member Lofgren. "Using AI, NOAA can make their translation process even faster--a perfect example of how this technology can improve lives. Time is precious in the face of extreme weather and climate events, and ensuring access to information is equitable and efficient is critical to NOAA's mission to preserve lives and property. I'm glad to see NOAA working to improve its communication capabilities, and I look forward to working with the Agency as they progress through this effort."
